This week I write with a warning about a very serious matter. It has come to my attention that scammers are operating in the local area and targeting a number of farms across Tendring. This has caused understandable alarm within the farming community.

The individuals involved are reportedly posing as legitimate roadworkers and approaching farms under that pretence. The initial contact sounds highly professional and convincing. However, the conversations have allegedly then turned aggressive, with intimidation and abusive language being used in an attempt to pressure victims into handing over money.

I understand that a large number of farmers have been targeted in this way, in some cases losing significant sums. The issue appears to be affecting farms in both my constituency and that of Bernard Jenkin next door.

I have written to the Chief Constable to ensure the issue receives the attention it deserves. Our farmers work extraordinarily hard and should not have to deal with this kind of behaviour.

The advice at this stage is straightforward: remain vigilant and do not allow anyone onto your property who claims to be carrying out work unless you are completely satisfied that they are legitimate. If something does not feel right, trust your instincts and contact the police.
