Next week is a big week for Clacton with the airshow taking place on Thursday, August 21 and Friday, August 22.

It is one of the highlights of the summer and we can expect to see crowds of up to 200,000 people visit the town across the two days.

Also taking place next week is the 28th Clacton Real Ale and Cider Festival organised by Tending Camra (Campaign for Real Ale).

Now, if there’s one MP that will absolutely do everything he can for British beers and British pubs, I think you know who it is.

Which is why I am using my column this week to highlight the festival.

Over the years the festival has become a cherished tradition in Clacton, attracting locals and visitors alike. This year’s event takes place from August 20-23 at St James’ Hall, in Tower Road, near the West Cliff Theatre.

As it happens, it is ideally situated for a trip to the airshow, too.

Last year I was one of almost 1,000 people who attended, and I was lucky enough to be shown around by festival organiser Mick Hearn, and also met with Gareth Francis, of Gruff Brewery, and local publican Mark Diggins, of the White Hart, in Stratford St Mary. They were able to tell me about the history of the festival as well as the problems that pubs and breweries are facing.

This year attendees can expect to see more than 50 real ales, cider, perries and Essex wines available for purchase as well as free soft drinks for designated drivers – so there is something for everyone.

Last year the event raised £600 for St Helena Hospice, and this year they will be fundraising for the Saturday Drop-In held at St James’ Church Hall.

So, if you’re planning to be in Clacton for the airshow why not try and make a visit to the real ale and cider festival and show your support for great British beers and pubs.
